Smoking

When we were young, we could see easily people smoking in the road or in a bus. That might be regarded as natural at that time in Korea. Since the danger of smoking was announced to the public, however, ban on smoking has been discussed constantly and seriously. Today, due to the sharp increase of concern about health, smokers are being attacked by non-smokers as if smoking is a crime. Is it really fair that smokers are treated like criminals?

Smoking is a kind of right to pursue happiness guarantied by the Constitution. People pursue their happiness in various ways and smoking is just one of these ways. So it should be respected as a right by all people even though it is harmful to human body. Of course, non-smokers assert that they also have a right: the right to live a happy and healthy life. However, this conflict between two parts cannot be a decisive problem if we recognize that there are a lot of conflicts among rights and that our duty is not demolishing the rights, but finding the way of respecting the rights and minimizing conflicts. We have various policies regarding smoking such as smoking only in designated area and campaign against smoking. Through enforcing the policies, we can protect non-smokers from most injury, prevent the young from starting smoking, and give smokers motivation to quit smoking.

Smoking doesn't play entirely bad role to individuals and society. The tax income from smokers in 1960s covered up to 16% of whole tax income. Still now, cigarette tax has been big income source of our government. In addition, smoking is helpful to human mentality in contrast to physical harm. Jung-Jo, one of the greatest kings of Chosun dynasty praised smoking in his essay as follows "Namryung-cho(the name of cigarette at that time) is of great use and better than tea or alcohol." It is another good effect that smoking contributes to our national wealth by providing employment in agriculture and distribution areas.

Smoking has good and bad sides. For a long time, we have told about its bad side. However, what we should keep in mind is that smokers have exercised their right within laws and that all people don't have the right to invade others' right if it is not illegal. In stead, we need to think about the individual and social devices to decrease the bad effects of smoking and finally enlarge our happiness all together.

Kimchi

Kimchi is a Korean representative fermented food that is made with various vegetables. Due to its hot and stinging taste, most Koreans really love Kimchi and it appears at almost every meal. In addition to attractive taste, it has excellent factors in aspects of its variety and nutritions.

The origin of Kimchi goes back to Kochosun, the first country in Korea Penisula. At that time, as it was before many ingredients including red chili peppers were not introduced, Kimch in those days was not like present Kimchi but it can be regarded as Kimchi in that it was pickled and fermented.

Types of kimchi differ from region to region, depending on harvest and weather conditions. The number of Kimchi types can not be easily counted; the Korean Food Academy has categorized over 100 different types such as Baechu Kimchi(Cabbage), Baechu Keotcheoli(Cabbage), Gat Kimchi(Mustard Leaf), Oi Sobaki(Cucumber), Chongak Kimchi(Ponytail Radish) and so on.

According to the type of Kimchi, the ingredients vary but those of Baechu Kimchi(Cabbage), the most familiar one are mainly cabbages, radishes, red chilli peppers, garlics, thick salt, spring onions, gingers, pickled seafood, sticky rice paste, sugar and so forth. Kimjang, Kimchi-making for the winter, usually starts in late October or early November and lasts for 2 or 3 days. Nowadays, due to the reduction of family size, the change of eating habits or development of cabbage cultivating, the importance of Kimjang has decreased but it is still considered as an annual family event and whole family or close relatives get together and work together when they do Kimjang. The process of Kimjang looks easy at a sight: washing cabbages, preparing materials, and stuffing ingredients inside each cabbage leaf. However, it needs very delicate care of pickling and seasoning, so young housewives ask for the help of their experienced mothers.

Kimchi has played a role as an important source of nutritions in fermented vegetables during the long winter. It has different kinds of nutritions based on ingredients and the level of fermentation. Usually, the ingredients of Kimchi have few calories and low levels of sugar, but contain high amounts of fibers, diverse vitamins and minerals. It helps protect against cancer and germs, and lower blood cholesterol. The nutrients and activities of the various micro-organisms produced during fermentation are also very beneficial to health and beauty.

Kimchi, a Korean traditional fermented food with various vegatables, has diverse types, good taste and abundant nutritions, and it is one of foreigers' most favorite Korean foods. Researchers say that Kimchi is one of the most healthful foods in the world. So many governments and institutions are trying to inform worldwide of its excellence. Kimch might be a good solution for keeping life healthy among harmful eating environments such as Endocrine disruptor.

Effects on my life of taking an English course

People experience great effects in life by various causes such as marriage, childbirth, employment, etc.. Changing jobs is also a big event which causes such effects. Recently, I have temporarily changed my job and it affects my daily life. What are effects on my life of taking an English course?

Taking an English course has good effects on my life. Above all, I can focus on studying English. I believe that it is really a precious chance to help me to survive in the global world. Besides, I can live more comfortably while taking this course. I am allowed to have casual wears and I can walk around the beautiful campus. I am free from stress of working. I don't have to work overtime and I can better take care of my family. Of course, I am under another stress of studying. It is, however, very positive in that this makes me improve.

Changing jobs doesn't have always good effects on my life. I feel isolated from society. Almost every day, I concentrate how to improve my English so I get indifferent to everything except for English. Sometimes I feel worried that I won't be able to adapt myself to the working life - the tight and tough working environment. Another bad effect is a bad reputation that may follow me after this course. Govenment workers usually think that people who attended any education courses had intended to run away from working and had spent time to play. It will be a tag to me in my career.

Taking an English course has advangtages and disadvantages at the same time as all events in the world do so. As for me, advantages are much more and bigger. It's because that 10months are given only for me to spend on what I really want, studying English. I am not sure if I can go up to my expected level of English. But I am really sure that it will be a important motive and the foundation for the improvement of English.

Mostly, these various adjustments occur at the same time. Because of hardship of adjustments, some couple have difficulties to last marital life. The adjustments aren't basically easy even to those who are well adapted, but, nevertheless they are essential to successful marital life. Metamophosis of a frog

We are sometimes alarmed with the wonder of the natural world. Metamorphosis is also a kind of this wonders. There are many species undergoing metamorphosis and that of a frog is well known to us.

The life of a frog starts with an egg, and it continues life as a tadpole. It is aquatic, lacks lungs, eyelids, front and hind legs, and has a cartilaginous skeleton, a lateral line system, gill for respiration and tail with folds of skin fins for swimming.

At the end of the tadpole stage after about five weeks as a tadpole, a tadpole begins to change. It undergoes metamorphosis, in which it transitions into adult form. Metamorphosis involves a dramatic transformation of morphology and physiology, It starts to grow hind legs, and it is soon followed with forelegs. Its tail becomes smaller. Lungs begin to develop, preparing the frog for its life on land. Now and then, it wiggles to the surface to breathe in air.

Over time, a tadpole becomes even more froglike. It has shed its skin and lips. Its mouth widens, and it loses its horny jaws. The tail becomes much smaller, and the legs grow. The lungs are almost functioning at this point.

Eleven weeks after an egg was laid, a fully developed frog with lungs, legs, and no tail emerges from the water. This frog will live mostly on land, with occasional swims. The tiny frogs begin to eat insects and worms.

Eventually, it will find a mate. The way this is done varies depending on the species but the whole process begins again at the same process.

The process of metamorphosis is quite amazing and complex, so it is stressful time in a frog's life, especially near the end of the process. We compare this process with our life mainly negatively: abnormal mentality or arrogance. But we should know that the metamorphosis is the noble and painful method to adapt an animal to the nature and to survive.

Contrasting my Present Car with the Previous One

I have a red small car MatizII and I have ridden it since last year. Before I changed my car, I had a New Grandeur. On vacation from the arm, my brother-in-law borrowed my car for traveling, but unfortunately he caused a car accident and my car was crashed. In the end, I had to change the car. The new car was chosen just because it was cheap. My old car was much more expensive by more than 4 times than MatizII. In addition to the price, there are so many differences between the two car models

First, the size is very different. One is small and the other is big. MatizII is very small so we can drive it safely in the narrow alley or even in the road which many cars are parked on either side of. We don't have to worry about scratches both on my car and other's ones. It is also parked easily even by people who are not good at parking. On the contrary, New Grandeur is very big so we can move comfortably and children can sleep in the back seat stretching their legs. Also, a lot of luggage can be loaded and more people can get on it.

Second, the functions are different. MatizII has only basic functions: driving, air conditioning, warming, carrying baggage, etc. On the contrary, New Grandeur has a lot of additional functions; the seats can be warmed automatically, and a back of a front chair can be entirely pulled back so that we can lie down like a first class of an airplane.

Third, the maintenance costs are very different. In case of MatizII, it takes a little money. For example, we can go farther by driving MatizII than New Grandeur at the same fuel and repairing charge is much cheaper. A toll and the parking fee are relatively cheaper. Besides, fifty percent discount is also given because its capacity is less than 1,000cc. Actually an auto tax is so low that it can be ignored. But, we need more money in order to maintain New Grandeur. It takes a lot of oil so it is said that we need ₩1,000 to roll a tire just once. Usually we have to pay more money for a toll and the parking fee. We cannot expect any discount as for a big car.

The two cars have their own features and they make a lot of differences. MatizII has many weak points but it is enough for a family of five to get on. When I changed my car, the fact that I had to spend money which I had not expected to spend, made me angry, but now I believe that MatizII was a good choice. When I see this cute car, I look forward to the day when I will drive it some day.

If I had no children

If I had no children, how would be my life different?
I am married and have one child. I can't think about my life without my new family especially my precious daughter. But I sometimes imagine the situation that I have no kids. If I had no children, my life must have been absolutely different from my present life.

In the morning, I could get up late because I could save a lot of time to help my daughter to wash, wear and eat. I could also have more time to enjoy breakfast talking with my husband and to make up carefully. In addition to time, I would not choose casual wear every morning because I would not have to protect my kid in the shaking bus, to catch running kid, or to carry sleeping daughter on my back.

On Weekdays, I would arrive early at the University to attend this English course and I would stay more for study, And, on weekends, I would meet my friends, take a short trip or just take a rest because I would not have to wash her two pieces of blanket and to take her to the church choir or her friends' house.

In the evening, I would have more comfortable time to meet my coworkers or friends and it means that I would not have to check the time to leave the meeting, in the middle of cheerful talking, to run to the day care center to pick up my daughter. I would cook very hot and spicy food that my husband and I would like to eat. When I go to bed, I would not feel guilty or sorry that I didn't do my best for my daughter and my life itself.

My daughter is a part of my life and I am very happy with her. But I sometimes dream freer life that makes me spend time for myself.

Adjustments to marriage(rewriting)

There are a lot of important adjustments that people must make when we get married. Also they consist of some types like personal, social, emotional, professional adjustments and so on.
First, personal adjustments are to put us into new position. For example, if we are women, we can be a daughter-in-law as well as a wife and that means to enlarge our family and to manage all sorts of matters related to new family. For another example, we should be responsible for housework like dusting, washing, ironing, cooking, etc. for daily life.
Second, social adjustments are resulted also from new relationship. We can make new relationship such as husband's friends and acquaintances, on the other hands, we can lose old relationship partially that we have made before marriage.
Third, emotional adjustments can be the most difficult for some people. We can be under stress for new duties or a sense of duty that we have to act and even think according to what other people expect as a married person. We may have the burden that we should get rid of the things that we enjoyed during being single.
Finally, professional adjustments are to change our attitude to the work. We may change our goal in the work place, and furthermore our work itself. Also in some case, we are to choose one of the two, home and work. Of course, we can manage both work and home but we can sometimes sit down at unsatisfactory results at work.
The adjustments are naturally very difficult even to those who are well adapted but they are essential to live successful marital life. If we believe that the adjustments are to give up a part of myself in order to get better future with new family, we can accept them easier than expected.

For example, if we are women, we can be a daughter-in-law as well as a wife and that means to enlarge our family and to manage all sorts of matters related to new family. For another example, we should be responsible for housework like dusting, washing, ironing, cooking, etc. for daily life.

Second, social adjustments are resulted also from new relations. We can make new relations such as husband's friends and acquaintances, on the other hands, we can lose past relations partially.

Third, emotional adjustments can be the most difficult for some people. We can get stress for new duties or a sense of duty that we have to act and even think according to what other people expect as a married person. We may have the burden that we should get rid of the things that we enjoyed during being single.

Finally, professional adjustments are to change our attitude to the work. We may change our goal in the work place, and furthermore our work itself. Also in some case, we are to choose one out of home and work. Of course, we can manage both work and home but we can sit down at poorly done results at work.

The adjustments are naturally very difficult even to those who are well adapted but they are essential to live successful marital life. If we believe that the adjustments are to give up a part of myself in order to get better future with new family, we can accept them easier than expected.

An International Language

English has become an important international language.

First, it is important in international communication. For example, airline pilots speak in English to communicate with other workers in the airplane or ground when they drive an international airplane. Otherwise, there must be serious accidents. For another example, world wide TV news or international newspapers are released in English so you can get more information if you can speak in English.

Second, English is important in business and trade. English is widely used in international business. Recently, English has become more important as the globalization has been fueled rapidly and the international economic organization such as World bank or the Common Market has been made to contribute to growth and control of the international business. Also owing to the increasing chances of international business such as trade negotiations or international currency exchange, the importance of English is creasing together.

Finally, English is important in international relations. If you want to work for Organization of American States, UN or World Court, excellent English skill is inevitable. Also when countries are concluding international treaties or diplomatic arrangements, English is used for official language. If the officials aren't good at English, the country can get worse results than they expect.

Nowadays, English is the key to success in some aspects. Whatever we do, we have to get the English skill in addition to our own field.

Annie's Mailbox(4/22)

One-time cheater?

Dear Annie: My husband and I are in our 40s. We have been married for 15 years and had a marriage most people would envy. We have no children.

My husband recently admitted to an indiscretion with a woman he has known for four years. This is not a woman he would ever take out in public. His pursuit of her was purely for sex. Once it happened, he never saw her again. (She confirmed this.) He only confessed because he developed a medical problem and was scared.

We are now separated and he is seeking counseling for self-esteem issues. He has begged and pleaded with me not to divorce him, but I feel as though I am married to a complete stranger. How could an intelligent, educated man who supposedly loves his wife actually go through with such an unspeakable act? Is it true "once a cheater, always a cheater"? Is there an explanation (other than midlife crisis) to assure me this was just a one-time experiment? -- Heartbroken in the South

Dear Heartbroken: We don't know why your husband felt the need to cheat, although therapy should help him find out. And we can't promise he won't do it again, but if therapy helps him, there is a possibility this was a one-time deal. The issue, as always, is trust. Which is why we recommend counseling for you, too. Marriage doesn't come with guarantees. Counseling will help you decide if you can live with the uncertainty. You have to do what lets you sleep at night.

Annie's Mail Box(4/11 Fri.)

Husband's girlfriend

Dear Annie: A few years ago, my husband, "Don," had an affair with a family friend. I discovered them kissing in the kitchen. I also found out Don's family knew about the affair. My sister-in-law actually provided a place for them to rendezvous.
My in-laws still welcome this woman and her husband into their homes. They are often invited to family functions, even though my in-laws know how painful it is for me. When she is around my husband, she tries to involve herself in his conversation. When he is with her, he acts like nothing ever happened, joking and laughing. Don and I have been to counseling, but it doesn't help when I see this Jezebel in his mother's house all the time.
I have tried to explain how uncomfortable this makes me, but Don says it's not his fault she is at his parents' when he visits his family. That's true. I also know his family can do what they want in their own home.
This woman is married, and her husband just sits back and says nothing. Don was not her first affair, nor her most recent. I don't think he's interested in picking up where he left off, so what do I do? -- Haunted by the Other Woman

Dear Haunted: Don needs to stay away from this woman, and if that means avoiding his family when she is there, so be it. He owes it to you not to treat the affair lightly and expect you to be chummy with a woman who has no respect for your marriage. He should inform his parents and siblings that when Jezebel is present, he will leave. And he should keep his word

peer feedback for Bos re:A person who influenced my ideas and education

1. writing by Bos

I want to tell about a person who has influenced my idea and my education. He is my supervising professor at the university in Korea.
He was born in 1960 as the youngest boy in his family. At that time his parents ①were old enough to raise him. When he talked about his parents it looked like he wanted to have ②youger parents. This is the only thing I've heard about ③his boy's life.
I met him when I was in Ph.D course at the graduate school in Seoul. At that time, he just came back to Korea from Canada where he got a doctor's degree. ④In those days first I met him, he was in post-doctorial course at the same university. But one year later, he became a professor and my supervising professor.
During my Ph.d years, he would give me a lots of ⑤courgement and advice for my future. Best ②encourgement giveny by him was as follows; "You are so smart that you can do whatever you want". By then, ⑦I was in hard time through my life I've ever had. Also ⑧he said if you meet three people who influenced your life, then you can make your life successful. Still now, whenever I have to make a decision I ask him to give his opinion.
In retrospect, I've already met one person who influenced my idea. Today, ⑨I will think about other people who influence my life. I am sure that I can have successful life as I want.

2. peer editing

The structure like introduction, conclusion and the sequence in your writing are good.
So I am pointing out only some mistakes in grammar, sexpressions and pellings. ①Were old enough to raise him means that they were old enough and they could raise him, so the phrase should be changed into "were too old to raise him" for negative meaning. The meaning of ③his boy's life looks like his son's life. In my opinion, his boyhood or his early days are more proper expressions. Also if you change '④In those days first I met him' into 'In those days when I met him first', it would be better. And normally, the superlative is put in front of the perfect tense, so the sentence of '⑦I was in hard time through my life I've ever had', is to be changed to 'I was in the hardest time(or one of the hardest times?) in my life I've ever had.
In ⑧if-clause, you mixed direct narration and indirect narration. So you should decide narration. "If you meet three people who influence your life, then you can make your life successful" or "if I met three people who influenced my life, then I could make my life successful" are more accrate.(but I'm not sure) Also, in '⑨I will think ~', it is more natural that will is deleted.
Here are the misspellings - younger for ②youger, encouragement given for ②encourgement giveny. And It is proper to use courage instead of ⑤courgement.

My Husband different from me(edited)

I would like to tell about my husband who is absolutely different from me about the attitude to the other sex.

In his twenties, he had a large acquaintance of the opposite sex. Before he married, he had many blind dates. He made friends with a couple of girls and fell in love with each of them. He had also the bravery to dash a girl looking in higher position than him. In addition, he didn't intend to hide his good feeling toward a girl and the fact that he was keeping company. He didn't feel shame after he was kicked out because he was serious and did his best. Even after he was left alone, he recovered from his pain of a broken heart very soon. There was no term that he didn't have a girlfriend.

Now he doesn't look regretful for his past. I am sometimes angry toward him and the socially generous mood for men's past but on the other hand, jealous of his experiences.

"my habitual activities in the past"(editied)

When I was an elementary school student, I was a really good girl.

I had a very good habit to start and finish my homework as soon as I returned home. Even though there were not my parents at home as they went out to work, and I waited for them outdoors, I would sit down on the ground and do my homework outside the house.
At that time, I would also like playing. After I finished my homework, I would go out and stay outside to play all day long. As I loved to play so much, my mom would call me several times for dinner. Sometimes I would not eat dinner in order to play.

If I think about present students that can't enjoy themselves to the full and can't study by themselves, I feel I would be happier than current students.

Second Foor Plan

Here is the 2nd floor of my relative's house. In this floor, there are two bedrooms, one bathroom, one balcony, one laundry, and one toilet.

If you go up to the 2nd floor, you can see a laundry with a washing machine and a toilet in the south of the floor. The laundry looks so small compared to the toilet. In the toilet, there are a toilet stool at the left side, a shower booth and a washbasin in a row at the right side. There is a bedroom2 in the right of the floor. It has one bed and two small tables on either side of the bed in the left of the room and a closet in the south of the room. There is a balcony in the norhteast corner of the floor. In the north of the floor, there is a master room which looks very big. In the north of the room, there are one big bed, two small tables on either side of the bed and two closets in the south of the room. 1st Floor Plan

There is a big square room.

In the room, there are much furniture and it is antique.

Against the eastern wall, there are a long sofa and two beautiful pictures over the sofa. The sofa has two cushions on the either side.
In the left of the room, there is a big glass door of which the frame is white. We can see the calm scene through the door.
In the south of the room, there is a table. This is a little big for the room.
In the north of the room, there is a piece of furniture but I don't know the use of it.
I think each furniture seems good but it doesn't match well one another.
